A Simple Method for State Detection of Rechargeable Lithium Ion Batteries

　　(1) Rechargeable battery is the core of many new technologies, such as the increasingly popular renewable energy. More specifically, they are used to power electric cars, phones and laptops. The University of Mainz and Helmholtz Research Institute in Germany recently demonstrated a non-contact method to detect the state of charge of lithium ion batteries and any potential defects. Therefore, the atomic magnetometer is used to measure the magnetic field around the battery. Professor Dmitry badk and his team usually use atomic magnetism to explore the basic problems of physics, such as searching for unknown particles. Magnetism is a term used to describe magnetic field measurement. The compass is a simple application example. The earth's magnetic field points it north.

　　(2) The demand for large capacity rechargeable batteries is growing, so a sensitive and accurate measurement technology is needed to determine the state of the battery. The development of many new technologies will depend on the production of batteries that can provide sufficient capacity and long service life. Dr Yan wickenbrook, one of the researchers, said: "Ensuring the quality of rechargeable batteries is a major challenge. Our non-contact detection method is expected to improve the quality of batteries.". The research team made a breakthrough by measuring with an atomic magnetometer. Wickenbrook said, "our technology is basically the same as magnetic resonance imaging, but it is simpler because we use atomic magnetometers.". They are commercially available and can be used for industrial applications and basic research. This simple method can realize fast and high-throughput measurement. In the case of battery measurement, place the battery in the background magnetic field. The battery changes the background magnetic field, which can be measured by an atomic magnetometer. Wickenbrook added: "This change provides us with information about the battery charging state, remaining battery power and possible damage. The research team said that the detection capability of this technology is expected to be used for research, quality control or evaluation during battery operation.
