What are the hazards of lithium battery production? In fact, pollution depends on how you look at it. The comparison of other batteries may be emphasized here, and then mainly refers to lithium ion batteries, because few companies produce lithium primary batteries. Will the production process of lithium ion battery production line cause pollution (gas, water and soil)? In the current production process of lithium-ion batteries, lithium-ion batteries will not be polluted by (toxic heavy metals).
(1) Start with the battery itself. Of course, this concept is relative. Compared with lead-acid and nickel chromium batteries, they have little pollution and no heavy metal pollution. But for the environment, it must be harmful (chemicals are non-toxic). Electrode materials, electrolytes and solvents may be contaminated: again, they are extremely low in content compared to conventional batteries.
(2) Possible pollution during battery production. Electrode plate manufacturing process: in these links, the domestic mainstream lithium iron phosphate system, even the ternary system, does not have too much pollution. Of course, the ternary system may still have some lithium cobalate pollution. For example, cobalt, manganese and nickel are heavy metals, but they are relatively harmless to the environment. Among them, lithium iron phosphate is the most environmentally friendly. For the rest, in addition to the material contamination described above, the solvent in the injection solution is mainly cyclic chain carbonate or carboxylate. The important solute is lithium hexafluorophosphate, the important additives are film forming additives, flame retardant additives, conductive additives and additives to improve low-temperature discharge. The pollution of the whole process is also good. Of course, chemicals do not pay attention to their control, which will inevitably pollute the environment. As for final packaging and molding, there is less pollution.
(3) Let's talk about the recovery part. Of course, it is necessary to recover lithium cobalate and ternary system. After all, it contains heavy metals. However, lithium iron phosphate is basically harmless, except for the internal electrolyte. Compared with other batteries, lead-free, mercury, cadmium and other toxic and harmful metal elements and substances cause less pollution. However, the substances in waste lithium-ion batteries will still cause heavy metal nickel and cobalt pollution (including arsenic), fluorine pollution, organic pollution, dust and acid-base pollution after entering the environment. Electrolytes and their conversion products of used lithium ion batteries, such as LiPF6, liasf6, licf3s03, HF, P201, and solvents and their decomposition hydrolysis products, such as dimethyl ether, methanol, formic acid, are toxic and harmful substances. Waste lithium-ion batteries still need to be sent to qualified places for unified treatment, and shall not be discarded at will.
