Due to different application scenarios, the performance requirements of batteries also vary. Firstly, as a mobile power source, power lithium batteries have high requirements for volume (and mass) energy density as much as possible under the premise of safety, in order to achieve more durable endurance. At the same time, users also hope that electric vehicles can be safely and quickly charged, so power lithium batteries have high requirements for energy density and power density. However, for safety reasons, energy type batteries with a charging and discharging capacity of around 1C are currently commonly used.
The vast majority of energy storage devices do not need to be moved, so there is no direct requirement for energy density in lithium energy storage batteries. As for power density, different energy storage scenarios have different requirements.
Chen Yongchong, the leader of the Energy Storage Technology Research Group of the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, once pointed out that for power peak shaving, off grid photovoltaic energy storage, or peak valley price difference energy storage scenarios on the user side, it is generally necessary to continuously charge or discharge the energy storage battery for more than two hours. Therefore, it is suitable to use capacity type batteries with a charge discharge rate ≤ 0.5C;
For energy storage scenarios with power frequency modulation or smooth fluctuations in renewable energy, it is necessary to quickly charge and discharge the energy storage battery in a time range of seconds to minutes, making it suitable for applications of ≥ 2C power type batteries; In some application scenarios that require both frequency modulation and peak shaving, energy based batteries are more suitable. Of course, in this scenario, power based and capacity based batteries can also be used together.
Secondly, compared to power lithium batteries, energy storage lithium batteries have higher requirements for calendar service life. The lifespan of new energy vehicles is generally 5-8 years, while the lifespan of energy storage projects is generally expected to be greater than 10 years. The cycle life of power lithium batteries is between 1000 and 2000 times, while the cycle life of energy storage lithium batteries is generally required to be greater than 3500 times. It is hoped that by developing new operation and maintenance regeneration technologies, an ultra long calendar energy storage life can be achieved
