Polymer lithium (ion) battery: the electrolyte is gelled or solid
Because the packaging material of polymer lithium ion battery is basically aluminum plastic film (soft package), the packaging material of liquid lithium ion battery is metal steel shell or aluminum shell. Therefore, there is a misunderstanding in the current market that the flexible packaging lithium batteries are polymer lithium batteries. In fact, most of the flexible packaging batteries produced by domestic manufacturers are still liquid electrolytes, not polymer lithium batteries.
In actual use, there is no difference between the three. There is little difference in battery voltage, which can be directly replaced. However, there is a difference in academia. The earliest lithium battery used lithium as the battery cathode, which appeared earlier and is still in use. Lithium thionyl chloride battery is a representative, but it is a primary battery and cannot be charged or discharged. Lithium ion battery was commercialized in the late 1990s. Its positive pole is oxide and its negative pole is carbon. The polymer battery can be seen as an upgraded version of lithium battery, but the previous electrolyte has been replaced with polymer electrolyte. Another upgrade is that the battery shell material has been replaced with plastic from metal. This also has the advantage of reducing the battery weight and improving the battery specific energy index. In fact, these three types of batteries can be said to be lithium ion batteries, because lithium ion migrates back and forth between the positive and negative poles during charging and discharging, but it is dangerous to use lithium metal as the motor, which is prone to accidents. Therefore, the secondary battery does not use lithium as electrode directly, and the polymer cost is high. Many so-called polymer batteries are soft packed, but the materials are still traditional lithium ion batteries
